WHAT THE RAIN SAID ABOUT LOVE

By Jennifer Chapis

to the rooster:
the echo is yours

to the feather:
futility does not suit you

to the buttercup:
you do not mean to die
mean never not to

to the genitalia of grasshoppers:
some will laugh
that’s their job

to the land:
fears leapt from the lake bottom

to the human heart:
gift the mouth of yourself
over and again

to the scrawling witness:
listen: bluebird heartbeat
thunder jackrabbit thunder

to the lovers:
resin the source
tenderness

to the fingerprint:
be small enough to feel it
